San Jose, California

San Jose is a city in and the county seat of Santa Clara County. The population was 945,942 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Northern California, the third-largest city in California, and the tenth-largest in the United States.

Originally known as El Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe, it was founded on November 29, 1777 as the first town in the Spanish colony of Nueva California, which later became Alta California. The city served as a farming community to support Spanish military installations at San Francisco and Monterey. When California gained statehood in 1850, San Jose was incorporated as a city and served as the state capital for two years. After over 150 years as an agricultural center, increased demand for housing from soldiers and other veterans returning from World War II and starting families, as well as aggressive expansion during the 1950s and 1960s led to San Jose being a bedroom community for Silicon Valley in the 1970s, which attracted more businesses to the city. By the 1990s, San Jose's central location within the booming technology industry in the area earned the city the nickname as the Capital of Silicon Valley.

In the late 1980s, after four decades of heavy development and population growth, San Jose surpassed San Francisco as the third most populous city in California.

2021 August 10th update - several attempts to clear the encampments have occurred, but their success is yet to be determined. See https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2021/08/04/san-jose-to-begin-clearing-massive-airport-homeless-camp/ Some locals estimate the homeless population to be as much as 600 people, but this is likely an exaggeration. Field estimates for population range between 50-100 people.

as of late 2019, and increasingly in 2021, "homeless" populations have sprung up in the area (particularly between Hedding and Asbury). These populations are quite innovative, building a vast number of large tarp and plywood fortifications. They utilize water from nearby public utilities, have large open fires for cooking, and live like urban tribal people. Estimated between 20-80 short term or long term residents based on observations.

near Valley Fair, street is named Monroe on four different street signs, and North Monroe on two (at the intersection of Stevens Creek), and I as a local have never heard of this street being called North Monroe, just Monroe.
