2021 August 10th update - several attempts to clear the encampments have occurred, but their success is yet to be determined. See https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2021/08/04/san-jose-to-begin-clearing-massive-airport-homeless-camp/
Some locals estimate the homeless population to be as much as 600 people, but this is likely an exaggeration. Field estimates for population range between 50-100 people.

as of late 2019, and increasingly in 2021, "homeless" populations have sprung up in the area (particularly between Hedding and Asbury). These populations are quite innovative, building a vast number of large tarp and plywood fortifications. They utilize water from nearby public utilities, have large open fires for cooking, and live like urban tribal people. Estimated between 20-80 short term or long term residents based on observations.
